The E-VOUS Library: Journaling

The Importance of Journaling

One day, Evocrates, the wise and mysterious old platypus who lives high in the western mountain range, appeared to Plato. He said, “You have not been keeping up with your journal, young platypus. You must write about your life in order to understand your life. If you do not spend that time in self-reflection, how can you be expected to know yourself?”

“You think just because you are you that means you understand yourself? Hah! Don’t make me laugh. You have to spend time reading a book to understand it, don’t you? You can’t simply carry it around with you to know what is inside of it. You must study it carefully, from cover to cover. The same is true for understanding yourself.”

“To reach the kind of self-knowledge necessary to set and achieve goals that will make you truly happy, you must examine and write about your life daily. Writing forces you to focus on the details of your feelings and actions. Thinking deeply about your life will help you discover your true nature. Understanding your true nature will help you discover what you want out of life. Understanding what you want out of life will help you set goals. Setting goals will help you achieve what you want out of life. And when you achieve what you want, you will be truly happy and at peace.”

Evocrates pulled a large, hardbound book from one sleeve and handed it to Plato.

“So get started, little platypus. Every day is precious. Don’t allow your history or the secret of your personality to slip away under the currents of Time.”
